42km Marathon Men's Open
1. Ahmida Lamchanmak - 2:43:06 - Morocco
2. Yong Jin Kiat - 3:23:26 - Singapore
3. Michael Hua - 3:24:57 - Singapore

Never thought i would be in top 50. Anyway was very very happy for my result!!! Looking at the top placings timings which looks pretty plausible if train harder. But heard from seniors that a few local renowned runners didn't take part for this event.

****DELAYED TELECAST****

Over a month worth of training, finally all was over before sun rise, completing the 42.195km (bullshit) run which tortured me unmercifully last year. Got my chance of 'revenge', with more than 1hr of improvement and possible personal best for my marathon.

Some of the timings from my watch
Completion timing: 4'03'33
0-10km: 53'30
10-20km: 54'51
20-32km: 1'11'39*
32-42km: 1'03'31*
(* Tentative timing, actual timing will reflected when result is out)

Some different stances i did for this race:
  • Ran with 4hr pacers
  • Lesser rest time at hydration station
  • No mp3 play
Running with pacers (summing up the above 3 points)
Feeling of running with pacer is like doing a 40 lap track workout (20 x 2k set with 15-20s RI). Nothing but just focus on the guy in front of me. Sticking to their pace even thou i feel i can run faster. Requires abit of discipline in pacing.

Learnt a few things with the more experience marathon runner. Found that they don't carry hydration bottle filled with a concoction of powergel and hydration salt with water (goes pretty well actually).

Noticed that they only brought along powergel and only consume them at late 20k mark. Also the art of jogging and drinking at the same time, which I'm still pretty uncomfortable with. Either having my face splashed with water or sucking air instead of the water, which i fear for stitch at the later part of run. Such efficient drinking also mean less rest/ walking time for me, giving my legs lesser time to 'take a break' (they broke eventually)

Was so excited with the race start that i forgot to take out and switch on my mp3 player. Thinking that i will end up with a silent 42k run.. But i pull back my thoughts once i was pacing behind the pacers. The footsteps synchronized all the runners, running at a harmonized tempo, which kept me running at a decent pace, almost the same pace i did for passion run. But yet with a perceived lower intensity.

Overall the run with the pacer is pleasant and will consider it in my race plan for Standard Chartered 2009 which I'm aiming for sub 3'45, a more than 10mins improvement from my previous timing.

Shall end this post here.. Will continue my post race commentary on my thoughts throughout the run on another post. Stay Tuned.
